Flight Training

Specialist Helicopters Flying School is owned and operated by David Adamson, an experienced helicopter Pilot, Flight Instructor and Flight Examiner

Specialist Helicopters offers you the opportunity to obtain the following licenses, ratings and endorsements:

Private Helicopter Licence

PRIVATE HELICOPTER LICENCE

Pre Requisites

  • 17 years of age
  • Aviation Reference Number
  • Class 2 Medical
  • English Language Proficiency (Student Licence Level 4 or above)
  • Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)

Theory Component

  • A pass in the CASA helicopter theory exam

The theory exam has a 70% pass mark and consists of the following subjects:

    • Aerodynamics
    • Aircraft General Knowledge
    • Air Law
    • Human Factors
    • Meteorology
    • Performance and Planning
    • Navigation

Flight Component

  • A minimum of 50 hours* flight experience is required. This includes dual and solo flight time, split into general flying and navigation exercises.
  • A flight test consisting of a minimum of 2.5 hours of flight time*This can be reduced if the student holds an Australian aeroplane licence
Commercial Helicopter Licence

COMMERCIAL HELICOPTER PILOTS LICENCE

Pre Requisites

  • 18 years of age
  • Aviation Reference Number
  • Class 1 Medical
  • English Language Proficiency (Student Licence Level 4)
  • Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)

Theory Component

  • A pass in the seven* CASA helicopter theory exams

*This can be reduced if the Student holds an Australian aeroplane licence

The theory exams have a 70% pass mark (except air law which has an 80% pass mark) and consists of the following subjects:

    • Aerodynamics
    • Aircraft General Knowledge
    • Air Law
    • Human Factors
    • Meteorology
    • Performance and Planning
    • Navigation

Flight Component

  • A minimum of 125 hours (this can be reduced to 105 hours) flight experience is required. This includes dual and solo flight time, split into general flying and navigation exercises.
  • A flight test consisting of a minimum of 2.5 hours flight time
Night VFR Rating

NIGHT VFR HELICOPTER

Pre Requisites

  • Private/Commercial Helicopter Licence

Theory Component

  • A pass in the Specialist Helicopters in-house night VFR theory exam

The theory exam has a 100% pass mark and consists of the following subjects:

    • Night VFR specific Air Law
    • Navigational Aids
    • Night VFR Instrumentation
    • Night VFR Procedures

Flight Component

  • A minimum of 10 hours flight experience is required. This includes dual flight time, split into general night flying and navigation exercises.
  • A flight test consisting of a minimum of 2.5 hours flight time
Helicopter Instructor Rating

INSTRUCTOR RATING

Pre Requisites

  • Commercial Helicopter Pilots Licence
  • 400 hours of flight experience (prior to sitting the flight test)
  • Adequate knowledge of the seven CPL theory exam subjects

Theory Component

  • A pass in the Specialist Helicopters in house helicopter Instructor theory exam
  • 150 hours of Ground School briefings covering the flight training sequences

The theory exam has a 100% pass mark and consists of the following subjects:

    • Principles and Methods of Instruction
    • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Flight Component

  • A minimum of 40 hours flight experience is required. This includes all dual flight time, split into general flying and navigation exercises.
  • A flight test consisting of a minimum of 1.5 hours of flight time

Our main training base is located at Orange, NSW with ancillary training bases in Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania.

Our locations offer a unique training environment. Close proximity to controlled airspace (class C and D), numerous non towered aerodromes and dedicated training areas for low level and mountain training.

Flight Component

  • A type rating is a competency based qualification, Part 61 does not stipulate any minimum flight hours.
  • Specialist Helicopters has a comprehensive syllabus of training for the issue of a type rating and this syllabus requires a minimum of 3 hours of flight time for a single engine helicopter and a minimum of 5 hours for a multi engine helicopter
Low Level Rating

LOW LEVEL RATING

A low level rating is a pre requisite qualification required before undertaking a mustering, aerial application, winching and/or sling endorsement.

A low level rating is also required for a commercial Pilot operating with a CAR 157 dispensation to conduct specific low level operations such as aerial photography, survey, culling…

Sling Endorsement

SLING ENDORSEMENT

Flight Component

A sling endorsement is a competency based qualification, the Civil Aviation Orders do not stipulate any minimum flight hours. However, Specialist Helicopters has a comprehensive syllabus of training for the issue of a sling endorsement and this syllabus requires a minimum of 2.0 hours of flight time.

  • A pass in the Specialist Helicopters in house nautical rules and regulations exam

Flight Component

  • A minimum of 1.5 hours flight experience is required for a fixed float endorsement if the student already holds a helicopter type endorsement for the aircraft being utilised for the fixed float endorsement.

Winch Endorsement

WINCHING ENDORSEMENT

Any helicopter which has an approved winch. Specialist Helicopters can offer the following aircraft:

  • Private Helicopter Pilots Licence

  • A pass in the Specialist Helicopters in house Aircraft Flight Manual winch specific exam
  • A pass in the Specialist Helicopters in house winch methods, rules and regulations exam

A winch endorsement is a competency based qualification, Part 61 does not stipulate any minimum flight hours. However, Specialist Helicopters has a comprehensive syllabus of training for the issue of a winch endorsement and this syllabus requires a minimum of 2.0 hours of flight time.
